How important is the cholesterol ratio in relation to non-HDL cholesterol?

In order to predict your risk of developing heart disease, a lot of doctors think that determining your non-HDL cholesterol level is more reliable than the calculation of the ratio of cholesterol. A level that is optimal for non- HDL cholesterol levels is less than 130 mg per deciliter (mg/dL) which is 3.37 millimoles per Liter (mmol/L). A higher number indicates a greater risk of developing heart disease.

To determine your cholesterol percentage determine your cholesterol ratio, simply divide your total cholesterol amount by HDL cholesterol level.
