How important is the cholesterol ratio in relation to non-HDL cholesterol?
In order to predict your risk of developing heart disease, a lot of doctors think that determining your non-HDL cholesterol level is more reliable than the calculation of the ratio of cholesterol. The two options seem to be a more reliable risk predictor than your overall cholesterol level or even the low-density lipoprotein (LDL also known as “bad”) cholesterol level.
Non-HDL cholesterol, as the name suggests, is simply subtracting the high-density lipoprotein (HDL also known as “good”) cholesterol number from your total cholesterol amount. It also contains all “bad” types of cholesterol.
A level that is optimal for non- HDL cholesterol levels is less than 130 mg per deciliter (mg/dL) which is 3.37 millimoles per Liter (mmol/L). A higher number indicates a greater risk of developing heart disease.
To determine your cholesterol percentage determine your cholesterol ratio, simply divide your total cholesterol amount by HDL cholesterol level. Also, if your total cholesterol levels are 200 mg/dL (5.2 mg/L) and you have an HDL If your blood pressure is 50 mg/dL (1.3 mg/L) Your ratio will be 4:1. A higher ratio means a greater risk of developing heart disease.
